Audiometric Hearing Testing in Van Nuys, CA

Workplace hearing loss doesn’t always happen all at once. Small changes can develop over time, and an employee may not notice them right away. Regular testing gives you a clearer picture of whether hearing has changed and whether your current workplace protections may need attention.

Healthline Medical Group provides audiometric hearing testing for employers in Van Nuys, California, and throughout the San Fernando Valley. Our occupational medicine team helps you keep employee testing organized, understand the next steps, and avoid the hassle of working with several different clinics.

Know When Employee Hearing Testing Is Required

Workplaces with high noise levels may need a hearing conservation program. Under OSHA’s Occupational Noise Exposure Standard, this requirement generally applies when employee noise exposure reaches an eight-hour time-weighted average of 85 decibels.

Audiometric testing is an important part of that program, but it isn’t the only part. Employers may also need to monitor workplace noise, provide appropriate hearing protection, train employees, and maintain required records.

OSHA hearing tests give you measurable information about an employee’s hearing. This can help you spot changes early, review whether current protections are working, and respond before a concern becomes more serious.

Start With a Baseline Audiogram

A baseline audiogram creates an initial record of an employee’s hearing thresholds. Future test results are compared with this baseline to look for changes.

OSHA generally requires a baseline test within six months of an employee’s first exposure at or above the action level. Before the test, the employee needs at least 14 hours without workplace noise exposure. Hearing protection may be used during that period, but employees should also be reminded to avoid loud recreational noise before their appointment.

Preparing employees ahead of time helps prevent confusion and makes it easier to obtain a useful baseline.

Track Hearing With Annual Audiometric Testing

After the baseline is established, covered employees generally receive audiometric hearing testing at least once each year. During the test, the employee wears headphones and responds to tones played at different frequencies and volumes. Each ear is tested separately.

The annual results are compared with the employee’s baseline. If the audiogram shows a possible standard threshold shift, additional steps may be needed. Depending on the circumstances, these may include retesting, reviewing hearing protection, providing more training, or arranging further medical evaluation.

This doesn’t automatically mean the change was caused by the workplace. It does mean the result deserves attention. Clear follow-up can help protect the employee while giving the employer the information needed to make responsible decisions.

Keep Your Hearing Conservation Program Organized

Missing records and inconsistent testing can create unnecessary work for your team. Before an appointment, employers should provide accurate employee identification, job information, available noise-exposure data, and previous audiograms. Having these details ready makes comparisons easier and reduces delays.
